Reverend David J. Slaughter

David was born in Magee, Mississippi to the late Dr. Kenneth B. Slaughter and the late Nancy A. Slaughter.  At age 2, the family moved to Picayune, Mississippi, where David attended Kindergarten and began Elementary School.  The Slaughters moved to Jackson, Mississippi.  David attended the Jackson Public Schools from 2nd through the 9th Grades.  David graduated from Mississippi Baptist High School in 1976, our country’s Bicentennial year.  David graduated from Belhaven College, now Belhaven University, in 1979, with a degree in Political Science/History.  In 1982, David received a Juris Doctorate from the Lamar Law Center at the University of Mississippi School of Law.  He practiced law for 12 years in Waynesboro, Mississippi and Jackson, Mississippi.  His most notable case was overturning years of precedent and allowing traffic reconstruction experts to testify in the state courts of Mississippi.

After leading a Worship service on Laity Sunday at Madison United Methodist Church, David received his second call from God to the ministry.  This time, he couldn’t run.  David attended seminary at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, graduating in 1997.

While in seminary, David served New Hope United Methodist Church in Carrollton, GA.  Since returning from seminary, Bro. David has served these appointments in Mississippi:

•Jackson Street UMC and Hawkins Chapel UMC in Brookhaven.

•Franklin UMC and Gitano UMC in Laurel.

• Bay Springs UMC and Holder’s Chapel UMC in Bay Springs.

•Shiloh UMC in Pelahatchie.

David is the third of 4 generations from the Alsworth family (his Mom’s family) to serve Methodist churches in Mississippi.

David has been married to the former Deborah Welford since 1985.  Deborah currently works at the Bank of Forest.  The couple have two children, William Roberts and Stephanie Tullos.  David and Deborah have 2 grandchildren, who are the best, and 2 coming with the coming marriage of their son!

Bro. David’s daughter Stephanie describes her Dad this way:

“our favorite Rebel 💙❤️, BBQ connoisseur, book loving 📖, world traveling 🌎, belly laughing, bad joke telling 😂 Bop.”
